Sam has worked with hundreds of individuals and dozens of institutions for over 30 years as a financial advisor, consultant, and Portfolio Manager. His clients have ranged from chief executive and chief financial officers of major corporations, to attorneys, doctors, and small business owners. Some of these individuals were widows, widowers or divorced individuals in need of understanding, compassion and excellent financial advice.
He began his career in 1983 at the Wall Street firm of Kidder Peabody, which eventually became Paine Webber/UBS. Following Kidder, he worked for 15 years as a Financial Advisor/ Senior Consultant at Morgan Stanley. During his time at Morgan Stanley, he was a featured speaker in the Intermountain West and West Coast regions, as well as a Senior Consultant in the Investment Management Consulting Program.
Sam returned to UBS/Paine Webber in 2004 and grew his investment management business to over 100 million dollars in assets under management. In 2007 while at UBS, Sam formed a partnership with Brianne Aune, a financial advisor and operations expert, who currently handles all operations and client administration for their business.
In June of 2009, Sam joined RBC Wealth Management after doing significant due diligence on sound investment practices and knowing RBC Wealth Management’s stellar reputation as a leading global investment bank. Prior to entering the financial services industry, Sam worked as a legal assistant to a large Salt Lake City Law firm and was the administrative assistant to the late Judge George W. Latimer.
Sam received a Bachelor of Science Degree, Political Science in 1983 from the University of Utah with a minor emphasis in Philosophy and Economics. In July of 1999, Sam earned the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®)certification taught in conjunction with Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He voluntarily relinquished active status with regard to the CIMA® certification on December 31, 2003 and is not currently certified. Sam is currently a member in good standing with the Investment Management Consultant Association of America (IMCA).
During his tenure at Morgan Stanley, Sam was a Top Producer and a President’s Club member. He is currently a member of the President's Council at RBC Wealth Management. He has received leadership recognition from several investment companies, including the American Funds Group and the Brandes Global Consultants Forum.
Sam holds the Series 7 (General Securities), 63 (Multi State), 66 (Uniform Combined State Law), and 31 (Managed Futures) licenses, as well as life, health and variable insurance licenses. Sam currently holds the exclusive designation of Senior Portfolio Manager - Portfolio Focus with RBC Wealth Management.
Sam has mentored several college interns and taught classes on investing at local Salt Lake City high schools and colleges. He has sponsored seminars on Fiduciary Investing for attorneys and accountants to obtain CLE credit and CPE credit in the state of Utah.
Sam has participated on several charitable and civic boards during his adult life. He is an avid sports enthusiast and actively participates in golf, basketball and lap swimming. He has also coached and sponsored several AAU basketball teams for the past decade. Sam is the proud father of two sons.
