What is an ESOP?

An employee stock ownership plan, or ESOP, is both a qualified retirement plan for employees as well as a tax-efficient exit strategy for business owners. Owners of successful closely held businesses often use ESOPs to create a market to sell some or all their shares to their employees, and if structured properly, the owner can use an ESOP strategy to manage the capital gain taxes associated with the sale.
