In honor of International Women’s Day, financial advisor Cat Weber reflects on the lasting impact and importance of ensuring the financial empowerment of women through planning and education

Financial Advisor Cat Weber and her mother, Amy Weber

In everyone’s life, there is an example of a lasting impact- whether that is a certain topic, viewpoint, feeling, person- the impact shapes who they are. My mom provided the lasting impact on my life. She has been a present force and a role model- she is the president of a roofing company and a wonderful mother. My mom’s success in running her business and our household instilled a confidence in me that I could accomplish anything that I set out to do. She leads by example in a way that taught me that women can care for themselves and for their finances by being thoughtful and organized.

As a financial advisor, I have taken these lessons from my mom and have found my passion in helping others understand their financial situation. I enjoy helping people make informed decisions about their current and future financial situation, that includes making a financial plan for themselves and their families. I am also passionate about empowering women to understand and be comfortable in asking questions regarding financial concepts. This interest comes from being the recipient of my mom’s influence and wanting to pass it on to other women.

Women take on many roles and being an advocate for themselves and prioritizing their financial health is important. 90% of women will oversee their family finances at some point in their lives by choosing to remain single, divorce or simply due to living longer than men. It is important to note that when it comes to managing investments, only 52% of women say that they are confident to do so, compared to 68% of men- even when they post the same financial literacy scores.1 This lower confidence can change through education and a mentality shift in accepting the reality that at some point in their lives, women will take the financial lead. Women are more than capable to step into a role in which they are responsible for their long-term financial security.

There are different resources available to women to understand their own thoughts and feelings that surround money. Linked below is a workbook which is a great starting point, with the prioritization of accumulating and growing wealth, funding lifestyle for today and tomorrow, protecting what is important, and creating a legacy. Each woman’s situation is unique. It is important to understand clearly one’s financial picture and to be empowered and encouraged to do so.
