RBC Global Citizen Award Trip 2019 - Joe Romero Returns From 2 Weeks in the Kenyan Maasai Mara Community
“It was amazing,” he said. “I was so touched by everything we saw and did there.”
The RBC Global Citizen Award is a partnership between RBC and the WE organization, which works to empower communities like the Maasai tribe of Kenya to build a sustainable future. During Joe’s trip, he and 46 other RBC colleagues from around the world came together to southern Kenya to partner with the Maasai community. During his trip he worked on two projects to complete the dormitories for both the primary and college schools that the WE organization started.
For Joe it was an eye-opening experience to see their level of poverty and the lack of running water and electricity, but yet just how happy the people were. “We don’t know how lucky we are here in the U.S. and just how small our problems are compared to theirs” he said. “We would never survive if we had to haul our water over a mile to our home”.
Joe also valued spending time with other RBC volunteers and hearing about the many different ways that RBC’ers help their communities prosper. Since his return home Joe has been energized by his recent experience, and says he will apply that energy to his annual kids camp.
