Dennis Hobbs, CPA®, CFP®, and former Mayor of Temple, Texas is one of those fortunate individuals who get to do work every day that really matters, and work that comes naturally, that uses all of his training, talents, and skills.
He learned early on the value of hard work and frugality from his entrepreneurial parents who showed him how to thrive and how to handle money. “I greatly admired that about my dad,” he says. “He didn’t have a whole lot of formal education, but he figured out how to build a prosperous business and take care of his family.”
Attending Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas on a golf scholarship, Dennis acquired a business degree and numerous awards along the way as well. Among other notable achievements, he was an all-American golfer, and was elected to the SHSU letterman Hall of Honor.
After graduation, he sat for the CPA exam, and during the 80’s he built and ran his own accounting practice, doing public accounting and tax work. He also found time to be chairman of the planning and zoning commission in Temple, and was elected mayor in 1990.
After a successful decade as a financial planner and adviser at Merrill Lynch, Dennis joined RBC Wealth Management in 2009 as a Vice President -Financial Advisor, and he’s quick to say that he’s never been happier. He credits much of his success in both politics and business to his ability to take complicated issues and simplify them.
When Dennis looks back, he believes that it was a natural progression for him to get into this business, and admits that he loves it. “I get a lot of pleasure out of helping people. When they retire, or when their kids get to go to college because we helped them make sound financial decisions, I feel like we are a part of that.”
Dennis is married to Lisa, and has two children, Lauren and Justin. They live in Austin, Texas.
