Community Involvement

The Leawood Branch has participated in Operation Backpack and Adopt a Family with the organization Phoenix Family. Their mission is to help families, children, and seniors in affordable housing communities exit poverty.

Phoenix Family provides backpacks and supplies to over 500 students in Kansas City, providing more than 11,000 individual supplies. We contribute through our generous donations of school supplies and monetary gifts. We have also adopted a family to help provide Christmas gifts, household items, and pantry staples.

Over the years, the organization identified families in the community unable to provide Christmas gifts for their children. Generous donors contribute new gifts and toys to support these families. The week before Christmas, screened families visit the Christmas warehouse to select gifts for each child, ensuring they are not receiving assistance from other agencies. In 2024, through both the Adopt-A-Family program and the Holiday Store, over 3,400 children received gifts. This achievement would not have been possible without the exceptional generosity of Christmas donors.

The Leawood Branch served dinner multiple nights at the Men's Shelter and collected 400 lbs of food and monetary donations as part of the Fight Hunger Campaign.

At Shelter KC, every life holds God-given dignity and purpose. Beyond providing a place to sleep, Shelter KC is a Christ-centered community where men and women find healing, recovery, and a path forward. Through emergency shelter, long-term recovery programs, education, and discipleship, lives transform. Addiction is overcome. Relationships are restored. Hope is rebuilt. Every day, transformation happens here—made possible through supporters like the Leawood Branch.

The Leawood branch collected $2,000 and organized a lunch-packing event. Together, they prepared and distributed 500 sack lunches to community members facing food insecurity.
