Elliott Hollub details how inflation has been the biggest change to our country that he has seen

There have been many changes in the country in my lifetime. I would have to say the biggest changes during my lifetime is inflation, the cost of goods and services. I can remember if I had a dime in my pocket I can get an ice cream from the good humor man. I could buy a Hershey bar for a nickel or a gumball for a penny it would cost $0.40 to get a seat in the bleachers at a Cubs game car fare was $0.15 a hot dog was $0.15 and a coke $0.10 and a scorecard with a pencil $0.10 then the streetcar back home $0.15. The whole experience about $1.00 and a nickel now to go to a ball game it costs $20 to park about $50.00 for a decent seat and $10.00 for a hot dog and $10.00 for a coke. That's inflation over the last 70 years. In the 1960s my wife had a budget of $25 a week for groceries.

When we had our first child if we went to a movie, it was about $1, and .50 cents an hour for a babysitter.0f course, I was earning considerably less about $450-$500 a month. There have been many other changes including better health care which increased life expectancy from 65 years old to about 80. New inventions and innovations like the electric clothes dryer, bank issued credit cards and the introduction of Tupperware. And of course, technological advances which revolutionized communications like the internet, smart phones, and the personal computer. I’ve noticed other changes like China becoming increasingly more prominent, women becoming more involved in the workplace and television going from 3 or 4 programs a week to 24/7 entertainment. Automobiles have gone from stick shift to automatic and air conditioning has been added to cars as well. So yes, there’s been many changes during my lifetime, and I would still have to say the biggest change is inflation.
