900 bicycles donated through our annual Bicycles for Kids event
Through our annual giveaway event, Bicycles for Kids, in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club of the Los Angeles Harbor, we have touched the lives of many children. To participate, children ages 7 to 18 years are invited to write essays explaining why they would like their own bikes, how the bikes would improve their lives and how they would care for their bikes. With answers spanning from a lack of school transportation to avoiding bullying to simply wanting to spend quality time with their family at the park, we are always touched by the meaning a new bike can bring to a child’s life. (In fact, it was our own fond memories of the bicycles of our youths that inspired the idea for the event.)
Through the years, we have been humbled by our community’s unwavering support. Our hope to impact a few children’s lives manifested itself into an annual block party, and over the years the event has welcomed everyone from volunteer fire and police departments to city council members like the mayor of Torrance, California to Super Bowl XVIII–winner and motivational speaker Shelby Jordan. In 2011, The City of Torrance proclaimed May 15, 2011 “PVG Foundation Day.” Through our partnership with Jay Wolff of Helen’s Cycles and Michael Shafer of The Depot Restaurant our team has had the privilege of making a positive contribution in the lives youth in our community since 2010.
Most importantly, more than 900 children from challenged and disadvantaged backgrounds have received their very own Trek bicycles, helmets, locks and training by the Torrance Police Department every year since we began this philanthropic venture. The tradition continues to this day.
