Why I do what I do
My mother was 38 when my Father died. It was sudden and unexpected; I was 13, my Brother, 10. He was the rock in our family and took care of everything. I remember watching her struggle those first few months, then years, having to suddenly take responsibility and learn how to gain financial control, relying on family and friends to guide her and trusting “experts” to take care of her. Several years later, she decided to relocate, sold the home we had grown up in in England, and moved to Scotland. She realized a profit on the house and after arriving in Scotland, walked into a local bank. Seeing a large balance in her account, was told she needed to speak with a financial specialist, so she did.
I moved to the United States in 1995 and after the birth of my first daughter, asked my Mum if she would consider retiring and coming to look after her. She said yes, applied for her Visa, and became a Trans-Atlantic Snowbird. With the birth of my second daughter, she shared with me, she didn’t think she could afford to travel backwards and forwards anymore. I questioned why as thought she was adequately taken care of; this was not the case at all. Long story short, the needs of the financial specialist had been put before hers. Unsuitable investments had been made that ultimately lead to financial hardship and a reverse mortgage. At no time was any wealth planning done.
I have learned the importance of planning and understanding the needs of the individual. Too often recommendations are made before establishing the most suitable path ahead. Financial markets are complex and when faced with an overwhelming number of investment choices, most individuals simply do not have the time, temperament, or ability to gather and analyze the necessary information to secure their financial future. Ultimately, this is my job in the relationship. I am the person who understands the wants, needs, and wishes. I care about my clients and know their situation. This is key to their success and my ultimate mission is to create confident, financially educated individuals, who understand and comprehend their money and financial situation. This was not done for my Mother and I strive to make sure no one is taken advantage of the way she was.
My Mother is the reason I do what I do. My Mother is why I am a financial advisor.
