At his core, Steve is a student of history. As the founder and leader of The Ross Group, Steve honors the legacy of his first employer, Ferris & Company (later Ferris, Baker Watts), which was acquired by RBC in 2008.
Two chance occurrences at Ferris served as the bedrock to Steve’s career. As an intern, he was assigned to Gail Winslow, one of the top female stockbrokers in Washington at a time when there were very few women in portfolio management roles. Steve also had the opportunity to drive George Ferris Sr., the founder of Ferris & Company, to and from the office every day for seven years. Those relationships with wise mentors who were leaders in their businesses and in their communities shaped Steve’s approach to the markets and to his team.
Over his 42-year career, Steve has become a trusted advisor to generations of families as they strive to meet their investment and financial goals. Steve is committed to providing clients with exemplary counsel ranging from portfolio management to financial planning and beyond.
Steve’s passion for helping families stems from his love of genealogy research, as he believes it provides families with their historical legacy and a foundation for their roles and responsibilities in the stewardship of their wealth.
Committed to the framework of value investing, Steve has travelled to Omaha, Nebraska for 20+ years to attend the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting to see and hear from his idol, Warren Buffett.
Steve is a member of RBC Wealth Management’s Chairman’s Council, which recognizes the firm’s top 150 financial advisors, and served on RBC Wealth Management’s Equity Leader Advisory Council. Prior to the Ferris, Baker Watts (FBW) merger with RBC Wealth Management, Steve was a member of FBW’s Board of Directors and chaired its Retail Advisory Board. Active in the community, Steve served on George Washington University’s Board of Trustees from 2006–2018. He also served for many years as a board member for the Washington, D.C.-based Kennedy Institute, serving children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Steve graduated with honors from George Washington University and has passed the Series 7, 63 and 66 securities exams and has attained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM designation.
Steve grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and now resides in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife, Lori. They have two adult children, Jenna and Andy. His interests and hobbies include participating in numerous sports, genealogy research, and providing free plumbing advice to friends, family and clients, as he is a descendant of three generations of South Jersey plumbing contractors.
